A federal judge on Tuesday temporarily blocked what would be the largest supermarket merger in U.S. history, involving Kroger and Albertsons.

The proposed $24.6 billion merger between supermarket giants Kroger and Albertsons floundered on Tuesday after judges overseeing two separate cases both halted the merger. Albertsons’ Safeway and Andronico’s Community Market chains have 39 local stores.

The supermarket chains said they were disappointed with Tuesday’s court rulings, adding that they are reviewing their options.
