The Liberal government has introduced a bill that would bring in a promised GST holiday starting next month — but it doesn't include the government's proposal to send $250 rebate cheques to certain Canadians.

The Liberal government introduced a stand-alone bill to implement its proposed GST holiday Wednesday, hours after the NDP threatened it would not pass the legislation if it was linked to a $250 rebate for working Canadians.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says his party will help the Liberals get legislation to create a temporary GST "holiday" introduced and passed in Parliament. But he says it will only do so if they separate it from their promised $250 working Canadians benefit which Singh says should be distributed more widely. (Nov. 27, 2024)
