The Krasheninnikov Volcano in Russia’s Far East has erupted for the second time in 24 hours, launching a massive ash plume 4 kilometers into the sky. Following an earlier 6km blast, the rare double eruption has stunned volcanologists and triggered aviation alerts across the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Russia’s Krasheninnikov volcano erupted for the first time in centuries on August 3, sending ash and gas nearly four miles into the atmosphere—less than 150 miles away from the epicenter of the magnitude 8.

The overnight eruption of the Krasheninnikov Volcano in Kamchatka, its first in 600 years, may be connected to the huge earthquake that rocked Russia’s Far East last week, Russia’s RIA state news agency and scientists reported on Sunday.
