Parts of the Upper Peninsula could get another foot of snow or more through Sunday night, according to the Gaylord office of the National Weather Service.

From ski towns to U.P. snowmobile areas, this holiday weekend snow is making lots of people excited for winter.

Northern Michigan is in the middle of a winter storm that started Friday and will bring a large amount of snow to the region into Monday. The lake effect snow bands were expected to bring more than a foot of snow to some parts the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan,

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — More than two feet of snow fell in Gaylord, Michigan on Friday, smashing its all-time daily record. The National Weather Service post in Gaylord said on Friday, Nov. 29, they recorded 24.4 inches of snow. The previous daily record was set on March 29, 1942, at 17".

Upper Peninsula: Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for big chunks of the U.P., both on the west side from Iron Mountain to the Keweenaw Peninsula, and on the east side from just east of Marquette and stretching over to the Soo. NWS forecasters are calling this a “long-duration lake-effect” event.

Areas of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula are expected to get more than a foot of snow as a winter storm blasts that part of the state Friday and into the weekend. The region is under a winter storm warning until 7 p.m. Sunday.

Lake-effect snow has been stacking up across West Michigan, with some communities recording more than a half-foot of fresh powder.

Although lake-effect snow will taper throughout the weekend, the below-freezing temperatures aren't going anywhere. Expect highs near 30° today with breezy winds leaving our wind chills in the upper teens. Saturday will be even colder, only topping out in the upper 20s but feeling like the low to mid-teens.
