Pope Francis, a reformer who rattled the Catholic Church's conservatives and inspired some progressives, has died.

Pope Francis died Monday morning at the age of 88, according to Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican camerlengo. "At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church," Farrell announced.

On March 13, 2013, Francis succeeded Pope Benedict XVI, who was the first pope to retire in six centuries. Francis became the 266th occupant of the papacy, which dates back to St. Peter, the disciple of Jesus Christ, who is considered the first pope.
