Shane van Gisbergen just threw a wrench in the NASCAR Cup Series playoff picture. Van Gisbergen got the second Cup Series win of his career on Sunday in NASCAR’s inaugural Cup race in Mexico City. He drove away from Christopher Bell in the final stage of the race to win by approximately 18 seconds.
The Trackhouse Racing driver will race for a championship despite being currently ranked outside the top 30 in the points standings.
The NASCAR standings and Cup points have been updated after the drivers competed in the Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway. Ryan Blaney won the race that kicked off the month of June.
The NASCAR Cup Series made its first points-paying foray outside the United States in over 60 years at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, but not everyone left Mexico City smiling.
