Mexico will take Google to court if maps shown to US-based users continue to label the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America across the entire body of water, President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday, arguing that US President Donald Trump’s order to rename it only applies to the part of the continental shelf under US control.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pointed out that the United States' claim to name the ocean area only applies for up to 12 nautical miles off its coastline.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she's considering a lawsuit against Google if its maps shown to U.S.-based users continue to label the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America."

We will wait for Google’s response and if not, we will proceed to court,” Sheinbaum said Monday during a morning press briefing.

Mexico's president is now threatening to take legal action after President Trump changed the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says Trump doesn't have authority to make the name change to this area of the continental shelf.
