At least 19 people have died as an outbreak of tornadoes ravished through the South and Midwest early Saturday morning, leaving a path of destruction in their wake.

At least 12 fatalities have been reported in Missouri, according to the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency. The deaths come as a massive storm system moving across the country unleashed winds that damaged buildings, whipped up deadly dust storms and fanned more than 100 wildfires.

The Storm Prediction Center on Friday issued a rare level-five threat rating for central Alabama and Mississippi, the highest risk.

The dangerous outbreak will continue to sweep through the South and East through the weekend. Saturday could be one of the worst severe weather days of the year.
