China said on Saturday it wanted to create an organisation to foster global cooperation on artificial intelligence, positioning itself as an alternative to the U.S. as the two vie for influence over the transformative technology.

China proposes establishing a world artificial intelligence cooperation organisation, Premier Li Qiang said on Saturday, calling on countries to coordinate development and security. Li said in his opening speech at the World AI Conference in Shanghai that AI governance is fragmented and that it is important to step up coordination to form a globally recognised framework for AI.

Speaking at the opening of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai on Saturday, Chinese premier Li Qiang said AI innovation was hindered by “bottlenecks” such as the supply of computer chips.
