There is anxiousness and uncertainty of what exactly the new tariffs will be and how they could impact the economy of El Paso-Juárez Borderland, which relies on trade between the neighboring nations. Mexico is the largest international trading partner for the United States and the state of Texas.

President Donald Trump ordered 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada and 10% tariffs on China to go into effect Tuesday.

President Trump and Mexican President Sheinbaum said they agreed to send more troops to the border and tackle U.S. arms smuggling into Mexico in exchange for a pause on tariffs.

Mexico and Canada are Texas’ two leading export markets. Tariffs on goods from those countries could lead to retaliation, potentially hurting Texas more than they’ll help.
