Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party and its allies were set to return to power in the nation's richest state, television channels reported on Saturday, a boost for the Hindu-nationalist leader after a disappointing general election.

The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance clinched a historic victory in the Maharashtra Assembly Elections, winning 235 out of 288 seats.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won seven of the nine assembly seats for which the bypolls were held on November 20.
