The US Commerce Department (USCD) has finalised a $406m subsidy for Taiwan's GlobalWafers, a silicon wafer manufacturer, under the US Chips and Science Act. This agreement, which builds on a preliminary accord from July 2024, supports GlobalWafers' subsidiaries, GlobalWafers America (GWA) and MEMC, contingent on achieving specific milestones.

The U.S. Commerce Department said on Tuesday it has finalized $406 million in government grants to Taiwan's GlobalWafers to significantly increase production of silicon wafers in the United States. The funds for projects in Texas and Missouri will establish the first high-volume U.

GlobalWafers secured up to $406 million in direct funding under the CHIPS Acts, supporting its planned $4 billion investment.

In a significant move to bolster the domestic semiconductor industry, the U.S. Commerce Department has approved a $406 million grant for Taiwan’s GlobalWafers. This funding is aimed at enhancing silicon wafer production within the United States.

The funds for projects in Texas and Missouri will establish the first high-volume US production of 300-mm wafers for advanced semiconductors.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has finalized up to $406M in funding for Taiwanese company GlobalWafers as part of the U.S. CHIPs Act to ramp up domestic silicon wafer production. The company had reached a preliminary memorandum of terms with the Department in July.
