Located in Puerto Rico's Northeast Region, El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the national forest system. At nearly 29,000 acres, it is one of the smallest in size, yet one of the most biologically diverse.

San Juan National Forest encompasses about 1.8 million acres in the southwestern corner of Colorado. From high-desert mesas to alpine peaks, these federal lands are managed for multiple uses and visitors are asked to respect each other and the natural resources.

There are 18.8 miles of roads and 24 miles of recreational trails in El Yunque. These trails are restricted to foot traffic (hiking) only. Use of horses, motorcycles or mountain bikes is not permitted on any trails.

Explore, Discover and Connect at El Portal de El Yunque. El Portal is the major visitor center of El Yunque National Forest and opened in 1996.

From the Airport/San Juan: Enter the Román Baldorioty de Castro highway (PR-26) toward the east. The highway will merge into highway PR-66 (toll road). Continue on PR-66 until it ends and turn right onto PR-3 East. Stay on PR-3 for approximately 6.3 km. After entering Rio Grande, you will turn right at the light onto Calle Principal (PR-955).

Due to its unique location in the Caribbean, the LNF thus becomes the single tropical rain forest in the USDA National Forest System. 1908 Illegal trails used for unlawful timber extraction appear in El Verde and Jimenez valleys of LNF.
